This past weekend (January 24-27) we went to the San Blas Islands. It was absolutely gorgeous with clear waters and a real tropical setting. I was surprised, though, at how windy it was (although thankful too because there were very few bugs).
I was also taken aback by how welcoming the Kunas wer
e when we went to their island. Children ran up to you and willingly took you around the island answering questions, and they even helped you find things that you wanted to buy (like necklaces or bracelets, etc.). They were also really into taking pictures. Every five minutes you would here “Foto, foto!!” and they would pose. When you were walking by all the kids would also shout “hola, hola, hola,” at you. They were all so cute!! And there were also the cutest little baby puppies on the island.
I was able to buy a few molas and some jewelry while I was there learning about the culture. It really opens your eyes to how important their manner o f life is. They have truly strived to maintain their traditional lifestyle, and they were able to achieve it.
